Part 1, Chapter 6 Summary

Scarlett wakes up on a raft “with the feeling she’d lost something significant” (44). She realizes a good deal of time must’ve passed, and she’s alone in the sea with Julian. She slaps him for kidnapping her but feels instantly filled with remorse. She doesn’t want to be like her father. They are rowing towards Isla de los Sueños, the island of dreams, where Julian assures Scarlett that Tella is waiting for them. He says the raft is only big enough for two. Scarlett immediately panics about her father’s reaction and her upcoming wedding, but Julian tells Scarlett that Tella has taken care of that. Tella staged a kidnapping by leaving Scarlett’s room a mess with a ransom note, so their father can’t be mad at them.

Scarlett debates whether she can actually attend Caraval. Julian says he’ll do whatever she wants: if she wants to go back to Trisda, then she can go back. He challenges her to see if she’s really brave enough to find out if there’s more to life than safety. Scarlett reminds him of her father’s abuse and states that her marriage to the count is her “only chance at happiness” (50). Julian doesn’t accept Scarlett’s black-and-white way of looking at her situation and flirts with her by flinging water on her with the oars while she tries to decide if she will join her sister at Caraval.
